TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 18 Washburn stayed unbeaten at home Thursday afternoon with a resounding 6-1 win over No. 40 Missouri Western. The Ichabods finish out the regular season home schedule with senior day against No. 42 Northwest Missouri on Saturday, April 18 at 10:30 a.m.
Renske Ubachs and Riko Konno led off doubles working a quick 6-1 victory at No. 3, giving the edge to the Ichabods (14-3, 5-1 MIAA). Playing on the top court Jasel Bailey and Saajida Razick battled back-and-forth into a tiebreaker, pulling away late to win 7-6(4) over No. 48 Jevrosima Mitic and Alejandra Ramirez Botella to secure the doubles point. Mariana Silva Balsa and Daniela Tijaro made it a sweep, coming from behind late to win 7-6(6) at No. 2.
Saajida Razick opened singles play with a pair of 6-3 victories on court four, putting Washburn up 2-0. No. 26 Renske Ubachs battled for a 6-3 win in her opening set on the top court and cruised to a 6-1 win in the second to bring up match point. The Griffons (14-3, 5-1 MIAA) got on the board as Daniela Tijaro fell in two sets, 4-6 and 2-6 at No. 3.
No. 56 Riko Konno dropped her first set on court two 4-6 but rebounded to win 6-2 in the second and jumped ahead in the third, holding on to win 6-4 and clinch the match. Playing at No. 5, Jasel Bailey lost her opening set 4-6 before winning 6-3 in the second and led 3-2 in the third when her opponent retired. Mariana Silva Balsa also turned her dual around after falling 4-6 in the first set on court six. She cruised to a 6-1 win in the second and dropped just two games to win 6-2 in the third and put an exclamation point on the match.
