TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 9 Washburn capped off a third straight undefeated regular season at home with a 6-1 senior day win over No. 50 Northwest Missouri on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods take the court next facing Arkansas-Fort Smith beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 24 in Fort Smith, Ark.
Prior to the match the five Washburn (14-5, 5-0 MIAA/GAC) seniors, Zino Nahirniak, Pavlos Parson, Mason Fair, Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Moritz Pieper, were recognized on the court in the morning. When the match began the No. 50 ranked duo of Pavlos Parson and Tommy Cecchetti worked quickly sweeping a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Kilian Martinez and Yuto Miyagawa were just behind them winning 6-1 at No. 3 to clinch doubles for the Ichabods. No. 8 Zino Nahirniak and Benjamin Fock completed a doubles sweep winning 6-4 on the top court.
No. 40 Tommy Cecchetti worked a clean 6-0 in his opening set at No. 3, followed by a 6-4 win in the second. Benjamin Fock battled to win 6-3 and 6-4 sets on court five, keeping the Bearcats (10-8, 2-2 MIAA/GAC) off the board and bring up match point. Moritz Pieper provided the clinch on senior day from No. 6, winning a pair of 6-3 sets.
No. 36 Pavlos Parson won 6-2 in his opening set on the top court before falling 3-6 in the second. He pulled away late to win 10-8 in the ten-point tiebreaker to add another point. No. 74 Yuto Miyagawa won 6-3 to begin his match on court four but lost 4-6 in the second and 8-10 in the third set as Northwest Missouri got on the board. No. 45 Kilian Martinez fought through a long first set to win 7-5 and worked quickly to win 6-3 in the second at No. 2 to finish off the match.
