TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 18 Washburn swept its way to the seventh MIAA Regular Season Championship in program history defeating Northeastern State 7-0 in the regular season finale on Saturday morning. After winning a share of a 2nd straight title the Ichabods will enter the MIAA Tournament as a top-two seed in Springfield, Mo. beginning Saturday, May 2.
Jasel Bailey and Saajida Razick led off the match sweeping their dual at No. 1 with a 6-0 victory. Mariana Silva Balsa and Daniela Tijaro followed suit on court two, clinching doubles for Washburn (17-3, 8-1 MIAA). Riko Konno and Resnke Ubachs took the final two games of their dual to win 6-4 at No. 3 and make it a doubles sweep.
In singles competition No. 28 Renske Ubachs led off winning 6-3 and 6-1 sets on the top court. No. 58 Riko Konno cruised to a 6-1 opening set win before taking a 6-3 victory in the second to bring up match point against the RiverHawks (12-9, 5-4 MIAA). Saajida Razick secured the match winning 6-2 and 6-1 sets on court five.
Daniela Tijaro added another point from No. 3 winning 6-2 in the first set before battling for a 6-4 second set win. Jasel Bailey opened with a 6-4 win then swept her second set on court four. Mariana Silva Balsa wrapped up the match winning 6-2 in the first set and 6-1 in the second from court six.
