No. 17 Washburn falls 4-1 to No. 8 Columbus State in Round of 16

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The 2025-26 season came to an end for No. 17 Washburn on Tuesday morning with a 4-1 loss to No. 8 Columbus State in the NCAA National Championships Round of 16. The Ichabods finish the season with a 20-5 record.  

The match opened with Washburn (20-5) creating a quick advantage in doubles play as Riko Konno and Renske Ubachs worked a swift 6-0 sweep at No. 2. Mariana Silva Balsa and Daniela Tijaro were just behind them, winning 6-1 on court three to clinch the first point of the match. No. 40 Saajida Razick and Jasel Bailey trailed 2-5 on court one when the point was decided.  

In singles competition the Cougars (21-4) got off to a quick start on all six courts. They added a point on court two first as No. 59 Riko Konno fell 6-2 and 6-0 in her two sets. Daniela Tijaro battled in the first set before falling just short at 6-4 and dropped a 6-2 second set as Columbus State took a 2-1 lead. No. 13 Nikoline Gullacksen topped No. 31 Renske Ubachs in two sets on the top court, winning 6-2 and 6-1 to bring up match point.  

Playing on court four Saajida Razick fell short in a 7-6(3) tiebreaker in her first set and the momentum swung to the Cougars as they closed out the match winning 6-0 in the second set. Jasel Bailey trailed one set to none and was tied 6-6 in the second at No. 5 when the match was decided. Charlotte Bair lost her opening set 3-6 at No. 6 but had battled to a 4-4 tie in the second set at the conclusion of the match.  

Season Notes:  

  • Won a share of a second straight MIAA Regular Season Championship – 7th in program history 

  • Reached the national championships for the 5th time in program history 

  • Reached the 20 win mark for the 7th time in program history 

  • Seven victories over ranked opponents 

  • Renske Ubachs won an ITA Central Region Singles Championship in the fall
