No. 11 Washburn ends season in National Quarterfinals to No. 1 West Florida

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- No. 11 Washburn's season came to an end on Thursday morning with a 4-0 loss to No. 1 West Florida in the NCAA National Quarterfinal round. The Ichabods end the season with a 20-6 record overall.  

The match began on the top court in doubles with No. 1 Deigo Duran and Sebastian Rondon getting ahead early on No. 9 Zino Nahirniak and Benjamin Fock and pulling away late to win 6-2 and give the Argonauts (28-1) the edge. No. 28 Pavlos Parson and Tommy Cecchetti were able to overcome a slow start and win the final two games for a 6-4 victory at No. 2, evening up singles play. Yuto Miyagawa and Kilian Martinez led 5-4 at No. 3 but were unable to clinch the match as West Florida came back to win 7-5 and go up 1-0 in the match. 

As singles play began Washburn (20-6) took the first set on two of the six courts. Zino Nahirniak fell in the first match to finish, losing 6-0 and 6-1 to No. 49 Rafael Sabio on court four. No. 43 Pavlos Parson fell behind early in his match against No. 1 Sebastian Rondon and was unable to recover, losing 6-2 and 6-0 sets on the top court as the Argonauts moved to match point. Yuto Miyagawa fell in a pair of 6-2 sets at No. 5 as West Florida was able to clinch the match with a sweep. 

No. 41 Kilian Martinez led No. 3 Diego Duran one set to none and was tied 4-4 in the second when the match was decided. No. 44 Tommy Cecchetti led 1-0 in the third set over No. 75 Mateo Martinez on court three and Benjamin Fock had just began the second set at No. 6 after falling in a tiebreaker in the first at the matches conclusion. 

Season notes:  

  • Won a fourth straight MIAA/GAC Tournament Championship – the 4th in program history as well 

  • Reached the second round at the ITA Indoor National Championships for a second straight season  

  • Reached the NCAA National Semifinal Round for a second straight season and third time in program history 

  • Pavlos Parson won the ITA Central Region Singles Championship in the fall 

  • Reached the NCAA National Championships for a fourth straight season 

  • Collected a third straight 20-win season, the 4th in program history
