KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Washburn junior linebacker J.C. Heim has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week following the Ichabods' 14-10 win over Central Oklahoma on Family Day Saturday in Topeka.

Heim finished with 12 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, and the game-sealing interception. Late in the first half, UCO had the ball inside the Ichabod one, UCO ran 5 plays without scoring a touchdown being held to a field goal and Heim collected four tackles on the drive. In the fourth quarter with 1:54 to go, Heim's break up on a fourth-down UCO pass play returned possession to the Ichabods at the UCO 48. After an Ichabod punt, UCO took possession with 1:30, Heim picked off a UCO pass at the WU 40 to seal the win for Washburn. His forced fumble came at the WU 24 after a sack and fumble returned the ball back to the Ichabods at the WU 38.

Washburn is back in action this weekend at Nebraska-Kearney with a 1 p.m. start and a 12:30 p.m. start on the Varsity app and the Ichabod Sports Network.
