SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- No. 6 Washburn closed out its time at the Sioux Falls Classic with a 3-0 sweep over Augustana on Saturday afternoon inside the Sanford Pentagon. The Ichabods will return home for the Ichabod Classic Tournament beginning Sept. 11.
After winning 25-17 in the opening set Washburn (8-0) battled for a 25-23 win in the second and carried the momentum into a 25-16 win in the third to sweep the Vikings (6-2).
Both sides traded punches to begin the first set, with the Ichabods creating separation with a three-point rally to lead 11-8 after Emma Siron and Brooklyn Morrissey teamed up for a block. Each time Augustana closed in on the lead Washburn responded, delivering the final counter with four straight points, winning the first set 25-17 after Siron slashed a kill from Shannon Frakes.
In the second set, the Vikings led deep into it, controlling an 18-14 advantage. After that point the Ichabods began an 8-1 run, leading 22-19 after Morrissey and Brynne Topolski made a rejection at the net. Augustana pulled back within one three times but each time Washburn responded as Siron once again finished the set with a kill, this time to win 25-23.
The momentum carried over into a 6-0 start to third set for the Ichabods. The lead grew to 9-1 with back-to-back kills from Morrissey. The Vikings made a run late but never pulled closer than seven points as Washburn put the set and match away with ease, winning 25-16.
The Ichabods tallied 42 kills in the match, hitting .255 as a squad while excelling on defense holding Augustana to a .093 hitting percentage as a team with 31 kills. Digs went in favor of the visitors as well, 59-45, and they also led 40-29 in digs.
Brooklyn Morrissey had a team-high 11 kills while also hitting .526 and adding five blocks. Shannon Frakes had a double-double with 32 assists and 13 digs. Both Taylor Rottinghaus and Autumn Gibbs had 13 digs on the back row while Emma Siron and Natalie Hedlund each contributed 10 kills up front.
Reagan Jansen led the way for the Vikings with 10 kills and had nine digs as well.
