Built in 1928, Whiting Fieldhouse was renovated in 2008 to give the Ichabods one of the top weight training and practice facilities in NCAA Division II. The original court level of the fieldhouse was turned into a 12,500 square foot weight training facility and one level above that a practice court was built, giving student-athletes plenty of space to train and practice year-round.

Over $7 million was spent on the renovation that also includes the Athletic Hall of Fame Room and offices for football coaches and the Sports Information Department.

The multi-racks in the weight training center are self-contained with all the weight on the rack. This allows the Washburn student-athlete to perform 90 to 95 percent of their work in one area. The racks and platforms have special features that allow the student-athlete to perform secondary exercises with special attachments. The installation of new equipment transformed Washburn's weight room into a top-notch facility.

One level above the weight facility is the Whiting practice court and a mezzanine level with cardio equipment and room for additional workouts. The surface of the gym floor can be configured to give volleyball and basketball multiple courts to practice on and it also gives other sports room to workout when weather forces them indoors.

The Washburn football locker room complex is also in Whiting Fieldhouse and it received a major renovation as well. The locker room was outfitted with 110 wood-framed lockers that house the Ichabods gear and an air-venting circulation system helps keep it dry after practice and games. The football team's equipment room is adjacent to the locker room and the weight training facility is steps away.

The original Whiting Fieldhouse court was used from 1929 to 1984 as the home of men's basketball and later women's basketball and volleyball. Phog Allen called the native sandstone structure the finest fieldhouse in the state when his Kansas Jayhawks helped open the facility in 1929.
