Augustana upsets Concordia-St. Paul to open NCAA Central Region tournament in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Sixth-seeded Augustana knocked off No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul, 78-66 Friday afternoon in the first game of the NCAA Central Region quarterfinals at  Schendel Court in Lee Arena.

The Vikings improved to 25-6 as they topped the Golden Bears for the second straight time after winning in the NSIC championship game. They will play Saturday at 5 p.m.against the No. 2 Central Missouri/No. 7 Southwestern Oklahoma game.

The Golden Bears (23-7) jumped to a 16-6 lead but the Vikings out-scored them 30-10 the rest of the half and led by 10, 36-26 at halftime.

Augustana never let CU get closer than seven down in the second half and had a game-high 22-point lead at the 5:50 mark after a 12-1 mark.

Alex Feeney led the Vikings with 20 points as she was 9 of 16 from the field with seven rebounds and a pair of 3-pointers. Faith Tinklenberg added 11 points and Lydia Nelson had 10. Augustana shot 48 percent as a team and was 7 of 21 from 3-point range.

The Golden Bears shot 45 percent as a team and 42 percent from 3-point range. Anika Whiting shot 6 of 12 from the field and had 15 points while Kionda Nicks and Rachel Hansen each had 12 points.
