Former Ichabod pitcher Chad Herren is in his second season as an assistant coach, returning to the Ichabods last season after five years as the Rock Creek High School head baseball coach.
Working primarily with pitchers in his first year, Herren helped the staff to a 4.97 team ERA (fifth lowest in the MIAA) and saw two pitchers - Mike Hefferan and Tanner Kilmer - earn all-MIAA nods.
Herren pitched in 2000 at Washburn and went 1-1 in five appearances. He was a teammate of Harley Douglas, current Washburn head coach. Herren earned a bachelor of education degree from Washburn in 2003 and a master’s degree in education from Baker in 2007.
Herren also played at Cloud County Community College and is a 1997 graduate of Lincoln Southeast High School.
The Lincoln, Nebraska, native was head coach at Lyndon High School from 2006 to 2008 and then was coach at Rock Creek from 2009 to 2014. He led his team to a 3A state runner-up finish in 2014 at Falley Field as Washburn University hosted that tournament. He also led his team to state in 2012 and was named the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches coach of the year that season.
Herren also taught special education at Rock Creek and Lyndon during his tenures at those schools and he will continue to do so with Topeka Public Schools.
He is married to the former Keri Tanner and the couple has two daughters, Boey and Kai.
