Shawn Joy

Shawn Joy enters his third season as the Ichabods' pitching coach in 2018 after joining the coaching staff before the 2015-16 academic year.

Since becoming a member of the coaching staff, Joy has worked with four All-MIAA selections including Greg Mason, Jaren Kutzke and 2016 MIAA Pitcher of the Year, Brett Tomko Award finalist and consensus All-Region selection, Nick Silva. Joy's work with the bullpen has produced consecutive single-season save records from Lance Barkley (7, 2016) and Marcus McKinney (8, 2017).

Prior to Washburn, Joy spent four seasons as an assistant at Independence CC where he served as pitching coach for his final three years, helping the program lower its team earned run average all three seasons. Joy worked with three all-conference pitchers, including a First Team All-KJCCC selection in 2015.  The Pirates made the postseason two of four seasons with Joy as an assistant, and in 2014 won the second most games in program history (23).

Joy began his coaching career as an intern with the Southern Illinois baseball program in 2009 while finishing his degree before serving as an assistant at Jefferson West HS (Meridan, Kan.) in 2010 and Cloud County CC in 2011.

As a player, Joy enjoyed a successful career at Cloud County CC (2004-06) before moving on to NCAA Division I Southern Illinois for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. During his time with the Salukis, Joy complied an 11-5 record and earned All-Missouri Valley honorable mention honors.

Following his senior season with SIU, Joy was signed as a free agent by the New York Yankees and pitched one season (2008) for the GCL Yankees in Tampa, Fla.  In his lone season with the club, he tossed 19.2 innings with a 3.66 ERA, posting a 1-1 record with four saves. He then pitched in the Frontier League for the next three seasons.  He joined the Traverse City Beach Bums (5-0 record, 2.90 ERA) in 2009 and spent the next two years with the Southern Illinois Miners, going 4-0 with a 3.36 ERA in 2010 and 6-4 with a 3.92 ERA in 2011, helping the team make the playoffs both years (including a division title in 2010).  His final year of professional ball was with the Quebec Captiales of the Canadian-American League, where he made three starts in 2012.

Joy is a graduate of Cloud County CC (Associates in Art, '06) and Southern Illinois University (Bachelors in Recreation, '09). He is a native of Topeka, Kan., where he currently resides with his wife Maegan.
