Former Ichabod quarterback Mitch Schurig is in his third season as a full-time assistant and will be moving to the offensive line from the defensive line for the 2023 season. Prior to joining the Ichabod coaching staff in 2022, he spent the summer as the cornerbacks coach at Minnesota State University. He spent the spring season of 2022 as a graduate assistant on the Ichabod staff.

After moving to the offensive line coach, he helped Andrew Funk to second team all-MIAA honors.

In his first season on the Ichabod staff, he helped lead three defensive linemen to all-MIAA honors including a second-team selection.

As an Ichabod he passed for 6,825 yards at Washburn throwing for 63 touchdowns which are the third and second best marks in program history. He ranks first in career completion percentage at Washburn (63.8 percent), first in passing efficiency, second in passing yards per game (220.2), second in touchdowns and second in passing completions. 

In the classroom, he was a six-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and placed on the MIAA Scholar Athlete list as a senior. He earned All-MIAA first Team after his senior season and an honorable mention all-MIAA pick after his junior season. 

He graduated in spring of 2020 with bachelor’s degree in education and completed his master’s degree in communication and leadership at Washburn in the summer of 2022.

Schurig lives in Topeka with his wife Taylor, and daughter, Palmer.
