All-American point guard Matt Keeley begins his second year in 2008-09 as an assistant coach at Washburn after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach at Manhattan High School.
Last year Keeley helped lead the Ichabods to an 18-11 season and a sixth-place finish in the MIAA at 9-9.
Keeley started for three and a half seasons as MidAmerica Nazarene’s point guard. His senior year he was named the Heart of America Conference most valuable player and he earned a spot on the NAIA All-America second team. His junior year he was named honorable mention All-American.
Keeley helped lead his team to four NAIA tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish his freshman year and a quarterfinal finish his sophomore and senior years.
After graduating in 2004 from MidAmerica Nazarene with a degree in secondary business education, he stayed on with the Pioneers as a graduate assistant for a season.
In 2005-06 he went on the Manhattan High School. Along with helping the basketball team, he also was an assistant track coach for two seasons.
Along with everyday coaching duties with the Ichabods, Keeley will assist with scheduling and recruiting.
Keeley’s family is already well known around Washburn. His sister, Cindy finished her four-year career on the women’s basketball team last year. She was the MIAA defensive MVP last year and she was also named team MVP. His father played football at Washburn from 1975-78.
Keeley graduated from Great Bend High School and he and his wife, Jana live in Topeka.
