Former Ichabod golfer Ronnie McHenry is in his third season as the head coach in 2023-24 after spending two seasons as the team’s volunteer assistant taking over the Washburn program in 2021.
Entering his third full season, he has led the Ichabods to two NCAA Super Regional appearances and an NCAA National Championship appearances finishing 18th in 2023 and 12th in 2021.
In the 2020-21 season, McHenry helped the Ichabods as an assistant coach reach the NCAA National Championships and coached the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Andrew Beckler. Beckler finished an Ichabod best second-place at the NCAA National Championships.
In 2022-23 season Washburn had 12 top-10 finishes including seven top-five finishes and a tournament title at the Ichabod Invitational and three runner-up finishes. The Ichabods moved up from 12th-place after the first round of the NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional to fourth to earn a spot in the NCAA National Championship meet.
With McHenry at the helm of the program, Washburn has had 21 top-10 finishes, 11 top-five finish and two team championships. Individually there have been 29 top-10 finishes, 12 top-five finishes and four individual medalist honors.
McHenry has coached a PING All-American, two PING All-Region selections and five all-MIAA honorees.
In the classroom, 23 Ichabods have earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll distinction and one has earned MIAA Scholar Athlete honors.
As a student-athlete, McHenry was a member of the Washburn golf squad from 2012-16 and held the title of team captain for three of those seasons. He earned all-MIAA accolades at the conclusion of his junior season and received team MVP honors as a sophomore and junior. He recorded a 75.8 career stroke average after 112 rounds and played in 47 tournaments.
Off the course, McHenry was a four-time selection to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business marketing & management.
His father, Ron McHenry, is currently a volunteer assistant for the golf team and was previously Washburn’s head Women’s Basketball coach. His sisters, Dani and Sami, both played basketball and volleyball at Washburn.
He is married to former Ichabod volleyball player Natalie Bates.
