Former Washburn player Brette (Ulsaker) Herber will begin her ninth season as a full-time assistant coach in 2021-22.
Herber played for Washburn for three seasons from 2007-08 to 2009-10 and she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in history from Washburn in 2011. Herber spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa Western Community College before coming back to Washburn. She coached the guards and assisted with practice plans while coordinating the team’s weight and conditioning program. The Reivers went 46-18 in 2011-12 and 2012-13 while she was there.
Herber was a student assistant coach at Washburn in 2010-11 as she finished her degree.
She was named the MIAA’s defensive player of the year in 2009-10 and she helped Washburn to an 80-16 record in three years. The team won MIAA regular season titles in 2007-08 and 2009-10 and won MIAA tournament titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10. The team went to the NCAA tournament all three years and made an Elite 8 appearance in 2007-08.
Herber played the 2006-07 season with Division I Utah, where she played in 30 games with 29 starts, averaging 3.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game before transferring to Washburn.
Herber is a native of McPherson, Kan., and a graduate of McPherson High School. Her brother, Christian Ulsaker, was a four-year member of the Ichabod men’s basketball and is currently the boy's head coach at Wabaunsee High School. Her sister, Ally, also graduated from Washburn and assisted in the athletic department office. In 2012, Brette married Matt Herber and the couple has two sons: Grayson and Asher.
