Alejandro Valarezo Plaza is in his second season as a graduate assistant coach for his alma mater after a successful playing career. He earned recognition as the ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year after helping the women's team to a record of 17-3 (7-1 MIAA) while the men went 11-5 (3-0 MIAA) with both teams finishing ranked in the top-25 in the ITA national rankings.
Valarezo Plaza is the winningest player in Washburn men's tennis history with a career 88-33 singles mark and a 102-19 doubles total. He is a three-time ITA All-American in doubles and earned ITA All-American honors in singles his senior year. He received a plethora of conference accolades in his career, including MIAA Co-Freshman of the Year, All-MIAA honorable mention at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and All-MIAA First Team selection at No. 1 doubles three times. Off the court, he was an MIAA Scholar Athlete and two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. In 2017, he won the ITA Central Region men's doubles and singles title and repeated as the regional doubles champion in 2018 before placing third at the ITA National Cup.
He graduated from Washburn in May 2019 with a bachelor's degree in Finance, Entrepreneurship and Innovation and will graduate with his MBA in May of 2021.
