Cody Smith joined the Washburn athletic department in August 2026 after working directly with multiple sports at the University of Iowa.
Smith served as a Student Equipment Room Assistant with Iowa Athletics from August 2023 through May 2026, working with baseball, softball, tennis, golf, swimming and diving, and track and field/cross country. His responsibilities included distributing equipment and apparel, managing laundry operations, maintaining inventory records through the SportSoft system, ordering gear through the Nike Gameday website, setting up locker rooms for game days and assisting with the overall organization and efficiency of the equipment room. He also trained new student employees and gained experience operating a heat press and using ISS cleaning products for equipment and apparel care.
In addition to his equipment responsibilities, Smith served as a Student Volleyball Manager with Iowa Athletics from January 2024 through May 2026. In that role, he assisted with team travel, lodging and meals, practice and match setup, game film management and daily team operations. He worked closely with the coaching staff and student-athletes and utilized Teamworks and GroupMe for team communication.
Smith gained leadership and program-management experience as a Summer Director Intern with Skyhawks Sports Milwaukee during the summer of 2025. He supervised coaches across multiple youth sports programs, developed daily and weekly schedules, handled customer-service concerns and helped ensure safe and engaging programming for youth athletes.
A graduate of the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Sport & Recreation Management, Smith gained valuable experience working directly with multiple Hawkeye athletic programs while developing his expertise in equipment operations.
