Former Ichabod golfer Ronnie McHenry is in his sixth season as the head coach in 2026-27. McHenry spent two seasons as the team’s volunteer assistant, before taking over the Washburn program in 2021.
Entering his sixth full season, he has led the Ichabods to five Men's NCAA Super Regionals, two women's NCAA Super Regionals, and two Men's NCAA National Championships appearances finishing 14th in 2026 and 18th in 2023. McHenry was also on the staff as an assistant coach, when Washburn notched NCAA Super Regional and National Championship appearances in the 2020-21 season.
In the 2025-26 season Washburn men's golf had 11 top-10 finishes, including four top-five finishes, and tied for first as a team at the Maverick Desert Classic. The 2025-26 season marked the second consecutive year the men's golf team had made the NCAA Super Regionals and the first appearance in the NCAA National Championships since 2023.
The Ichabod women's golf team had 18 top-10 finishes, including 12 top-five finishes. Washburn also placed first as a team at the Women's Firekeeper Open. Washburn women's golf placed seventh at the NCAA Super Regionals in the 2025-26 season. McHenry was named MIAA Women's Golf Co-Coach of the Year for the 2025-26 season.
Following a NCAA regional appearance in 2025, the Ichabod coach picked up his first regional champion as Marco Anderson won the individual title advancing to the NCAA National Championships where he placed 101st. The Ichabod men’s program recorded 10, top-10 finishes during the season and was third in the MIAA final standings.
During the 2024-25 season, the Ichabod golf program added a women’s program that qualified for the NCAA Central Regional. The women’s program had six top-10 performances in its first year of existence, recording two top-two showings.
In 2022-23 season Washburn had 17 top-10 finishes including five top-five finishes, and a tournament title at the Ichabod Invitational and three runner-up finishes. The Ichabods moved up from 12th-place after the first round of the NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional to fourth to earn a spot in the NCAA National Championships.
In the 2020-21 season, McHenry helped the Ichabods as an assistant coach reach the NCAA National Championships and coached the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Andrew Beckler. Beckler finished an Ichabod best second-place at the NCAA National Championships.
With McHenry at the helm of the program, Washburn men's golf has 28 top-five team finishes and three team championships. Individually there have been 54 top-10 finishes, 21 top-five finishes, and 10 individual medalists.
Washburn women's golf has totaled 31 top-10 finishes, 19 top-5 finishes, and six individual medalists since their inaugural 2024-25 season.
McHenry has coached one PING All-American, two PING All-Region selections, six men's golf All-MIAA honorees, and two All-MIAA honorees for women's golf.
In the classroom, 31 men's golf members have earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll distinction and two have earned MIAA Scholar Athlete honors.
For women's golf, 10 have earned all MIAA Academic Honors, and two earned MIAA Scholar Athlete honors.
As a student-athlete, McHenry was a member of the Washburn golf squad from 2012-16 and held the title of team captain for three of those seasons. He earned All-MIAA accolades at the conclusion of his junior season and received team MVP honors as a sophomore and junior. He recorded a 75.8 career stroke average after 112 rounds and played in 47 tournaments.
Off the course, McHenry was a four-time selection to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business marketing & management.
His father, Ron McHenry, is currently a volunteer assistant for the golf team and was previously the head coach for Washburn women’s basketball. His sisters, Dani and Sami, both played basketball and volleyball at Washburn.
He is married to former Ichabod volleyball player Natalie Bates.
