Irene Sanz – Junior – Biology
When did you start playing basketball? How did you get into it?
IS: I started playing basketball when I was seven years old. I used to do gymnastics when I was six but didn’t like it so I decided I wanted to try something different. One of my best friends played basketball so she was like “just come try it” and I did and I liked it.

What has been the most exciting moment in your career at Washburn?
IS: I don’t have one specific moment but the people here are so exciting. The energy that we have on the team, it’s just exciting! I look at the season and I don’t have one specific moment but just the general energy we have- it’s really exciting. We all want to play and give the effort and it’s really nice.

Since COVID put a hold on a lot of things, how did you spend that extra time?
IS: I have a big hobby, painting and drawing. I’ve found that since I was a kid and I really enjoy it. It’s something that I did a lot during quarantine.

What are you looking forward to most in this upcoming season?
IS: I just want to play. Of course, I want to get far with the team. Our first thing we’re really looking forward to is to play and enjoy it. The main thing is to play and enjoy the team, and if we get lucky, we get to play all the games and the whole season and get far.

Do you have any personal goals for the season?
IS: Not any specific goals, like numbers, but I really want to be helpful for the team and be important. I want to step up and be a good teammate this year and help the team.

You’re studying biology. What do you plan on doing with your career?
IS: I’ll probably go back to Spain and I want to work in a biology lab. I don’t really know exactly which one but I’ve loved being in the lab since I was a kid so that’s really what I’m looking for. When I was in high school, we used to do labs and I just really enjoyed it and I liked being in the lab.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
IS: I would say Greece. It’s just a place I’ve always wanted to go. Actually, when I was like 15 or 16, I used to tell my mom that I wanted to get married there. But I think it’s a pretty place and I’ve always wanted to go there!

What superhero power would you want and why?
IS: Probably teleportation so I can be able to go anywhere like that. I really like to travel. Being here away from home, I think that would be very helpful to just go there whenever.

Favorite quote?
IS: One of my favorites basketball wise- I can’t remember it exactly but it’s like “if you don’t go all in, don’t go at all.” If you do something or try something, just give everything you’ve got because if not, there’s no point of trying or doing something. That’s very related to basketball but I think that’s something you can also apply to everything.

Anything else you’d like to add?
IS: Hopefully we get to play. We’re really excited to play and start the season because we’ve been working really hard. If that happens, we hope people enjoy the games. Go Bods!
