The fifth-ranked Lady Blues finished the first day of their Premier Mortgage Fall Classic with a 30-19, 30-22, 30-20 sweep over Abilene Christian Friday, winning their 18th straight match to tie a school record.
Washburn (23-1) can look to add to the record Saturday with a 9 a.m. match with Dallas Baptist and then a 6 p.m. match with No. 17 West Texas A&M to close out the 10-team classic.
Two Lady Blues will enter Saturday inches away from setting career milestones.
Monica Miesner had eight kills to move her career total to 994 while
Mandi Cox has 991 after registering nine. They will look to become the 12th and 13th members of Washburn's 1,000 kill club and Miesner will look to become the seventh member of the 1,000 kill/1,000 dig club as she reached the dig milestone earlier this year.
Tessa Jones, already a member of the 1,000 kill club, had 11 to lead the team. Cox led the attack with a .571 percentage to go along with a team-high four blocks while
Kate Hampson had 33 assists.
Erica Cowhick led the back row with 18 digs and Miesner had 16.
Washburn hit just .183 as a team but took advantage of .000 hitting and 10 service errors by the Wildcats.
The Lady Blues have not lost since a 3-1 setback August 31 against Nebraska-Kearney. Their previous 18-match winning streak came in 2005 when they finished out the regular season and went to the second round of the MIAA tournament before losing.
