Tessa Jones pounded down a season-high 24 kills and she and Monica Miesner had double-doubles as the Lady Blues beat a top-10 opponent for the first time in two years with a 3-1 (30-26, 30-27, 27-30, 30-25) win over No. 5 Florida Southern Friday night at Lee Arena in front of 635 fans.

The closely-fought match featured 28 ties and 12 lead changes.

No. 8 Washburn (15-1) will look to extend a 10-match winning streak when it plays a non-conference match at Northwest Missouri State Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Lady Blues started out shaky against the Moccasins (10-2), losing the first three points on attack errors. Jones got the Lady Blues on the board first with a kill to start a 5-0 rally and Washburn led the rest of the way behind seven more kills from Jones.

In game two the Moccasins went ahead 16-11 on a 7-2 run, forcing a timeout by Washburn. Jones came out of the timeout with a kill and then the Lady Blues tied the score at 17-17, but FSC went on a 9-2 run and threatened to tie the match at one game apiece, up 26-19.

Kate Hampson then served four straight WU points off a service ace and three Florida Southern errors. After a kill by FSC's Beverly Stasis, one of four Moccasins with double-figure kills, Molly Smith served the final five points, highlighted by kills from Jones and Stephanie Nitz, as the Lady Blues capped a rally and a 30-27 win.

The Moccasins ended up on top in game three as the lead changed five times and there were 13 ties. They hit .259 as a team while WU hit .193 in the game. Washburn was up, 26-23 late in the game but the Moccasins scored four straight points to go ahead and force a WU timeout. After the break Jones laid down another kill but two straight WU attack errors gave FSC the win and forced game four.

The two teams played close early in the fourth game but after an FSC attack error Jones served four straight points with Miesner adding consecutive kills. The Lady Blues led the rest of the way and Mandi Cox had the final two kills for the Lady Blues to clinch the win.

Jones finished with just three errors in 62 attempts to hit .339 and she added 14 digs for her third double-double of the year. Miesner added 14 kills and 17 digs while Erica Cowhick led the back row with 25 digs.

Setter Kate Hampson had 51 assists and another error-free day as she had four kills in eight attempts.

Washburn had a season-high 16 blocks in the match with Stephanie Nitz leading the team with eight. Jones had six while Cox had five.

FSC was led by Beverly Stasis with 17 kills and 20 digs. Ashley Martin also had a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. The two teams nearly matched each other on the attack with WU hitting .205 and FSC hitting .204 as a team. The Moccasins had a 70-68 edge on kills but Washburn made up the difference by leading 16-13 on blocks and 6-3 on aces.

The Lady Blues defeated a top-10 opponent at home for the first time since defeating No. 7 Central Missouri in 2004 and it was their biggest win against a ranked team since topping No. 1 Truman in 2005 at TSU. Head coach Chris Herron evened his record at home against ranked teams at 10-10 in six years.
