Lady Blues top Gorillas in 5-set thriller

On a career night for Monica Miesner and Kate Hampson, the Lady Blues fought back after losing games one and three to post a 3-2 win over No. 12 Pittsburg State (22-30, 30-18, 23-30, 30-25, 15-12) in front of 775 fans Friday night in Lee Arena. Seventh-ranked Washburn improved to 17-1 (2-0 MIAA) and won its 12th straight game while the Gorillas dropped to 15-2 and 2-1.

The Lady Blues will continue conference action when they host Missouri Southern Saturday at 6 p.m. in Lee Arena.

Miesner had a double-double with 19 kills and 19 digs and she became the 16th Lady Blue to reach 1,000 digs in her career, now with 1,004. She also tied for second at WU with her 35th career double-double. She hit .386 and had six blocks to total 24 points.

The Lady Blues hit .239 as a team and had 82 kills behind a career-high 66 assists from setter Kate Hampson. Her total tied for third most in a single game for a Lady Blue since rally scoring began in 2001. She also added a double-double with 20 digs, one away from her career high.

Along with Miesner, four other Lady Blues reached double figures in kills. Tessa Jones had 18 with 24 digs for a double-double, Mandi Cox had 11 and Anna Simpson-Mills and Stephanie Nitz each had 10. Nitz led the team with a .643 attack percentage.

The Washburn back line was busy as four players reached double figures in digs and the Lady Blues totaled 101 as a team. They also had 12 blocks with Miesner leading with six, Nitz adding four and three others having three apiece.
