Lady Blues top Missouri Southern to win 13th straight

Four Lady Blues reached double figures in kills and three had double-doubles as they defeated Missouri Southern, 30-19, 30-19, 30-25 Saturday night in Lee Arena to win their 13th straight match. No. 7 Washburn improved to 18-1 and a perfect 3-0 in the MIAA while the Lions dropped to 10-8 and 1-4 in the conference.

The Lady Blues will continue their home stand when they host Emporia State Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Lee Arena.

Washburn once again had a strong hitting performance with a .329 team attack percentage. Tessa Jones and Stephanie Nitz each hit over .400 and Caitlin Conley came off the bench to lead the team with a .474 percentage.

Monica Miesner led the Lady Blues with 13 kills and added another double-double with 12 digs. Jones also had a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs while Nitz and Conley reached double figures in kills with 10 each.

Setter Kate Hampson, one day after setting a career-high with 66 assists, had 55 assists to set a school record in a three-game match. She added 14 digs for a double-double.

On defense the Lady Blues blockers combined for just three blocks while Erica Cowhick led the back row with 17 digs.

The Lady Blues were nearly able to match their 30-19 wins from the first two games in the third game. They forced game point at 29-19 but the Lions scored six straight points to pull within 29-25. After a WU timeout Joanna Alfers got a kill to clinch the match for Washburn.

The Lions hit .163 as a team and were led in the attack by Ashlee Russell with nine kills.
