Tessa Jones became the 11th member of Washburn's 1,000 kill club as she totaled 14 of them Friday night in a 3-0 (30-25, 30-14, 30-27) win against Harding in the Lady Bison Classic. The 12th-ranked Lady Blues improved to 11-1 as they finished the first day of the tournament 2-0. They will finish action Saturday against Eastern New Mexico and Montevallo.
Jones entered the match one kill shy of the milestone and quickly earned it on Washburn's third point of the match. She finished the night hitting .419 with just one error in 31 attempts.
Caitlin Conley came off the bench to gather 12 kills and hit .364 while the Lady Blues hit .270 as a team. Harding managed just a .030 attack percentage and suffered 14 total blocks from Washburn.
Jones led the Lady Blues above the net with eight blocks while
Stephanie Nitz had six.
Kate Hampson had 44 assists and
Erica Cowhick and
Monica Miesner had double-figure dig matches with Cowhick leading with 20.
Washburn fell behind 10-6 and 14-10 in the opening game but came back to tie it at 16-16. The two teams were later tied at 23-23 but the Lady Blues ended on a 7-2 run to win the game.
The Lady Blues had no problem in the second game as they used a 15-3 run to put away the Lady Bison.
The Lady Bison made it interesting in game three. They were up 24-19 until they gave up three straight points on attack errors. A kill by Nitz then tied the match at 27-27 and then a Jones Kill and an HU error finished off Washburn's 4-0 run to win the match.
