SEARCY, Ark. - The Lady Blues kept their opponents to near-zero hitting in a pair of sweeps Saturday at the Harding Lady Bison Classic to improve to 13-1 and increase their winning streak to eight matches. No. 12 Washburn defeated Eastern New Mexico, 30-21, 30-18, 30-17 in the morning match and then beat Montevallo, 30-13, 30-24, 30-21 to finish the two-day tournament with four three-game sweeps.
Washburn will look to continue its winning streak with a 7 p.m. match Wednesday at Fort Hays State to begin MIAA play.
In the opener
Tessa Jones and
Mandi Cox reached double figures in kills with 15 and 10, respectively. Cox led the hitters with a .400 attack percentage and Washburn hit .283 as a team while ENMU hit just .009, recording negative percentages in the final two games.
Erica Cowhick led the Lady Blues back line with 19 digs while
Monica Miesner had 17. The defense recorded nine blocks with
Stephanie Nitz having a part in four of them. Setter
Kate Hampson had 39 assists.
In the second game WU once again took advantage of poor hitting by its opponent as Montevallo had a .007 team percentage. The Lady Blues hit .333 with Miesner going .412 with eight kills and one error in 17 attempts. Hampson orchastrated the offense with 27 assists and had a perfect six kills in six attempts.
Washburn's defense had 11 blocks with Cox leading with five. Miesner, Cowhick and
Molly Smith all reached double figures in digs, led by Miesner's 18.
