Washburn's five starting attackers combined for 27 kills with just one error as the ninth-ranked Lady Blues beat East Central, 25-9, 25-17, 25-13, in their first match of the Lady Blues Fall Classic Friday afternoon in Lee Arena.
The Lady Blues will continue action Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 20 Midwestern State.
Washburn (15-2) got eight kills from
Ashley Shepard, seven from
Caitlin Conley and six from
Monica Miesner. Along with three each from
Mollie Lacy and
Stephanie Nitz, the five attackers combined to hit .456 while the team hit .375 all together.
Kate Hampson had 22 assists for WU and
Molly Smith led with 11 digs. Lacy led above the net with four blocks.
The Lady Blues didn't give the Lady Tigers much chance to start each set. Washburn went up 10-0 in the first set and led 16-1 midway though and in the second set WU opened on a 7-0 run. Hampson served both runs. In the third set the Lady Blues started on a 3-0 run and led 5-1 and then 10-3.
East Central (5-12) hit .060 and was led by Holly Hicks with eight kills.
