DeAndre Eggins and
Darnell Kimble each scored in double figures and led with nine rebounds each but the Ichabods let Missouri Western score the first 10 points as they fell, 76-72 at MWSU Monday night.
Washburn (7-4, 3-1 MIAA) will return to Lee Arena to host Fort Hays State on Wednesday, New Year's Eve at 3:30 p.m.
With 49 seconds remaining the Griffons led by 11 but Eggins hit three staight 3-pointers, the last with 18 seconds left that pulled WU within three points.
After that the Ichabods committed an intentional foul and then three technicals and MWSU made 7 of 12 free throws in the final 12 seconds. William McNeill and
Steve Feighny each hit 3-pointers near the end but it wasn't enough.
Eggins led with 18 points as he knocked down three 3-pointers and was 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Kimble was 5 of 11 from the field for 11 points.
Lekheythan Malone scored eight points off the bench and McNeill had seven with a team-high three steals.
The Griffons led from start to finish as they opened the game with a 3-pointer that kicked off a 10-0 run. Meanwhile, the Ichabods missed their first six shots before Eggins made a pair of free throws and then
Logan Stutz and McNeill each made lay-ups to make the score 10-6.
The Ichabods got within three in the first half but trailed by eight, 32-24 at halftime. In the second half the Griffons built the lead as high as 14 with 2:14 remaining.
Washburn out-shot MWSU in every aspect. The Ichabods shot 41 percent from the field while MWSU was 36 percent. They held a 50 percent to 40 percent advantage from long range and a 70 percent to 49 percent advantage from the fhree throw line. WU also held a 52-34 advantage on rebounds.
The Griffons made up for that by taking advantage of 23 WU turnovers while only giving the ball away 13 times.
