EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team was swept by No. 21 Emporia State in the Turnpike Tussle after dropping the first game 4-2, while falling in the second game 6-3, 11-3 in six innings. The Lady Blues (27-23, 9-7 MIAA) will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader in St. Joseph, Mo., against Missouri Western on Monday night beginning at 5 p.m.
Game 1 - #21 Emporia State 4, Washburn 2 - Box Score
The Hornets scored the first four runs of the game with two coming in the first and two more unearned runs coming in the second inning jumping out to the 4-0 lead. The Lady Blue sscored both of their runs in the top of the third as
Dani White had a 2 RBI single to center scoring
Maggie West and
Mandy Tarbutton.
Kelly Swygert started the game, but was pulled after two innings in favor of
Kayla Long, who held ESU scoreless for the remaining four innings. ESU stranded 13 base runners in the opener.
White had two of the five hits for the Lady Blues with both RBI.
Game 2 - #21 Emporia State 11, Washburn 3 - Box Score
The Lady Blues fell 11-3 in six innings as the Hornets scored six in the second inning, four more in the fourth and closed out the game with a solo run in the sixth inning ending the contest with the run rule.
Brooke DeVader and
Candi Madill each had two hits and Madill drove in two runs on a pair of singles.
Whitney Tapp scored two of the three runs and DeVader scored the other run for the Lady Blues.
Long took the loss after allowing six earned runs. Swygert pitched two more innings and
Megan Kimerer finished up the game.
