ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues split their final regular season MIAA doubleheader with Missouri Western taking the first game 6-4 while dropping the nightcap 5-4. Washburn is tied for fourth in the final MIAA standings with Pittsburg State, but will be the No. 5 seed by virtue of the Gorillas splitting a doubleheader with Emporia State earlier in the season. The tournament begins on Thursday at noon in Shawnee, Kan.
Game 1 - Washburn 6, Missouri Western 4 - Box Score
Both teams were scoreless through the first three innings before Washburn got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs by
Brooke DeVader and
Dani White.
The Griffons scored on in each the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings before Washburn erupted with four runs in the top of the seventh.
Tish Williams drove in a run with a double to right center and DeVader drove in another with a ground out to second. White drove in two more runs with a single to left putting Washburn up 6-2.
Missouri Western rallied to score two in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Washburn held on for the win.
White finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Williams finished with two hits and
Jessie Batres also had two hits.
Kelly Swygert picked up her 17th win of the season allowing three unearned runs scattering seven hits.
Game 2 - Missouri Western 5, Washburn 4 - Box Score
The Lady Blues were behind 5-0 entering the top of the seventh inning, but Washburn cut the lead to 5-4, but could not add another as the Lady Blues fell 5-4.
Tish Williams hit her school single-season record 15th home run in the inning driving in three runs and
Whitney Tapp also smacked a home run in the inning.
Washburn was limited to six hits in the game, but the Lady Blues'
Kayla Long held the Griffons to five hits as both teams stranded four base runners.
