EMPORIA, Kan. – The Washburn Lady Blues gave up four unearned runs in a 5-3 loss to NO. 6 Emporia State in the first round of the NCAA North Central Regional Tournament at Trussler Sports Complex. Washburn will take on Minnesota State at 10 a.m. on Friday morning.
Emporia State scored four runs in the second inning, three unearned on two Washburn errors breaking out to a 4-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, the Lady Blues scored two runs with two outs. After a pair of pop flies, Tish Williams tripled to the game in left center field. Mandy Tarbutton singled to nearly the same spot scoring Williams. Tarbutton scored the second run of the game for the Lady Blues as she was chased home by a Brooke DeVader single to right center.
Washburn cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth as Washburn took advantage of an ESU error as Candi Madill scored on a throwing error. In the sixth, the Hornets added another unearned run pushing the lead to 5-3.
The Lady Blues left the bases loaded in the seventh and had runners on second and third with one out, but could not add any to the score as Washburn flew out to ninth to end the game.
Kelly Swygert took the loss in the circle allowing the one earned run scattering six hits. Tarbutton had two hits with an RBI and a run scored. Williams had her fifth triple of the season.
Washburn is 2-0 against Minnesota State this season taking a 3-2 win on March 22 at the Missouri Western Invitational and a 6-5 victory over the Mavericks at the UNO Classic one week later. Washburn is 8-3 all-time against MSU winning five of the last six games.
