PUEBLO, Colo. - Freshman Mollie Lacey led the Lady Blues with 11 kills and once again Washburn held its opponent to a low attack percentage in a 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 win over Colorado-Colorado Springs Friday in the Colorado State-Pueblo Fall Classic. No. 2 Washburn will play host school UCCS at 11 a.m. Central Saturday and then wrap up the opening weekend at 3 p.m. against Angelo State.
Lacey had 10 kills with two errors in 18 attempts to hit .444 in the match. Monica Miesner came short of a double-double with nine kills and nine digs and
Kate Hampson conducted the offense with 35 assists.
After a 1-1 tie early the Lady Blues led the entire first set.
Molly Smith, who led the back row with 12 digs, served a 5-0 run that made the score 11-4. The Lady Blues later went on an 8-1 run to go up 23-11 and then they closed the opening set with a kill from Miesner.
There were six ties and five lead changes in the second set. Down 12-8, the Lady Blues went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-12 lead but the Mountain Lions later went on a 6-1 run to take a 23-21 lead. A kill from Miesner made the score 23-22 and then Smith served the last three points, getting a service ace, a kill from Miesner and then a UCCS setting error to clinch the win.
Washburn led the entire third set and went on an 8-2 run at the end to secure the sweep. Lacey had the final three kills for Washburn and Miesner had a pair of service aces during the run.
Washburn hit .222 and kept UCCS to a .059 attack percentage. The Mountain Lions (1-1) were led by Lauren Orth with nine kills.
