MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods trailed at the half 29-28 but opened the second stanza on a 5-0 run holding Northwest Missouri without a field for the first 4:38 and held the lead the remainder of the game in a 71-65 win over the Bearcats. Washburn (11-8, 7-5 MIAA) will return home to take on Missouri Western on Saturday night in Lee Arena at 7:30 p.m.
The Ichabods scored the first five points of the second half to take a 33-29 lead while Washburn held the Bearcats without a field goal for the first 4:38 of the half. The Ichabods built a second half lead to 45-37 as
Nate Daniels scored four straight for Washburn on a tip in and a pair of free throws with 10:05 left. After Northwest cut the lead to five at 45-40, back-to-back 3-pointers for the Ichabods by
James Williams and Daniels put the Ichabods up nine at 51-42 with 9:07 to go in the game.
With Washburn leading 51-44, the Ichabods'
Lekheythan Malone was fouled on a dunk attempt, but picked up a technical. Northwest hit one free throw and Malone added one on his attempts to put Washburn up 52-45 with just under eight minutes to play.
The Ichabods were holding a 52-49 lead and WIlliams connected on a 3-pointer with 6:42 to go and
Darnell Kimble scored lay up putting Washburn up 57-49 with 6:17 to play in the game. The Bearcats cut the lead down to 61-57 with 1:46 remaining, but
DeAndre Eggins hit a pair of free throws pushing the lead back to six at 63-57.
Coming out of timeout and holding the six-point margin, Eggins was fouled and went to the line with 1:05 left and hit the first putting Washburn up 64-57. The Bearcats' Mike Larsen hit about a 26-foot 3-pointer pulling Northwest within four at 64-60 with 36.6 seconds remaining.
Daniels was fouled and hit the first of two and then with 24.8 remaining, the Bearcats' Hunter Henry hit a 3-pointer drawing Northwest Missouri within two at 65-63. Following a Northwest foul,
Covier Carter went to the line with 18.9 seconds left and hit both attempts giving Washburn a 67-63 lead. The Bearcats came up empty on the ensuing possession and Kimble was fouled with ten seconds left. He hit both free throws to give Washburn a 69-63 lead. The Bearcats scored on a layup and Williams was then fouled and then connected on both attempts giving Washburn a 71-65 lead.
In the first half, there were 12 lead changes and 12 ties with the Bearcats taking a 29-28 lead into the halftime locker room.
Washburn shot 46 percent from the field hitting 12 of 26 attempts from the field and they held Northwest to 38 percent as the Bearcats hit 11 of 29. The Bearcats were also 1 of 10 from 3-point range but they went 6 of 8 from the free throw line while Washburn hit both of their two attempts from the charity stripe.
The Ichabods were led by Kimble who scored 16 points off the bench hitting 7 of 9 attempts from the field. Eggins scored 14 and
Nate Daniels scored a career-high 10 points
Elijah Allen scored 24 to take game honors and recorded a double double with 10 rebounds.
Washburn finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field going 23 of 45 including an 11 of 19 (58 percent) performance in the second half. The Ichabods held the Bearcats to 36 percent shooting. The teams combined for 41 turnovers with the Ichabods recording 24.
