WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The eighth-ranked Washburn Lady Blues had their season come to an end with a 17-25, 25-27, 20-25 loss to fifth-ranked West Texas A&M on Friday night in the South Central Region Semifinals. Washburn ends the season 33-5.
The Lady Buffs (36-3) jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in set one, before the Lady Blues tied the match at six and later pulled to within two at 16-14. WTAMU closed the set on a 9-3 run to win 25-17.
Set two was all Washburn early with the Lady Blues jumping out to a 6-3 lead. WU extended the lead to seven at 18-11, but the Lady Buffs rallied with a 12-5 run to tie the set at 23-all, then closed out the frame at 27-25.
Washburn led 6-3 early in set three, but WTAMU went on another run scoring six straight points to take a 9-6 lead. The Lady Buffs pushed the lead to seven before WU rallied to 18-16. Five straight points by WTAMU gave the Lady Buffs a 23-16 lead and the Lady Blues next rally was too little too late as WTAMU closed out the set and the match at 25-20.
Kate Hampson led Washburn with 33 assists and 17 digs, her 17th double double of the season and 55th of her career. Hampson finishes her Washburn career first all-time in three categories and her 5,897 career assists are the second most in MIAA history. Her 55 career double doubles are third most in school history behind only Dani (McHenry) Schmidt (67) and
Monica Miesner (65).
Freshman
Jessica Kopp led WU with 11 kills, she also added 11 digs for the first double double of her career.
Molly Smith finished with 15 digs giving her 584 for the season, the seventh most in a single season in Washburn history.
Melissa Harper led West Texas A&M with 15 kills.
