Ichabods blitz net in second half of win over Kansas Wesleyan

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Playing their second game in as many days, the Washburn Ichabods turned a 1-point lead at the break into a 56 percent shooting exhibition in the second half in an 86-59 win over Kansas Wesleyan. Washburn (4-0) will take on Baker on Saturday night in Lee Arena at 7:30 p.m. before opening MIAA play on Dec. 2 at Nebraska-Omaha.

Washburn fell behind in the first half by as many as nine points in large part to a 29 to 10 advantage on the glass with 12 offensive rebounds for the Coyotes accounting for 15 second chance points as the teams traded the lead five time each in the first 20 minutes of the game.

In the second half, Washburn held the Coyotes without a point until the 16:42 mark of the second half while the Ichabods ripped off a 17-3 run over the first 5:19 of the second half pushing their lead to 49-32. The Coyotes would get no closer than 12 the rest of the game.

De'Andre Washington led the Ichabods with a career-high 25 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field. He had 15 points in the first half hitting 6 of 8 attempts from the field including his only 3-point attempt. Virgil Philistin had 14 points off the bench and William McNeill scored 11 points. Willie McCarty scored 12 off the bench to pace Kansas Wesleyan.

After shooting 45 percent in the first half while hitting 14 of 31 attempts, the Ichabods heated up to 14 of 25 shooting in the second half for a 56 percent clip. The Ichabods were also 7 of 13 from the 3-point line in the second stanza after going 1 of 8 in the opening period.
