OMAHA, Neb. -- A nearly six minute stretch without a field goal proved too much to overcome for the Ichabods as they fell 80-72 at Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday night. Washburn will return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Northwest Missouri State.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than seven. Washburn (5-1, 0-1 MIAA) took a 17-14 lead with 10:23 remaining in the opening half on a jumper from
Dezahn Otis. A 20-10 run by the Mavericks (6-0, 1-0 MIAA) gave UNO a 34-27 lead with 2:23 to play in the period. The Ichabods closed the half with a 7-1 run and trailed 35-34 at the break.
A 7-3 run to start the second half gave WU a 41-38 lead with 17:16 remaining in regulation. The lead was 44-42 on a three from
Bobby Chipman when Washburn went into a nearly six minute scoreless drought. Nebraska-Omaha outscored the Bods 10-0 during that span and opened a 52-44 lead with just over 10 to play.
UNO pushed the lead to 11 with just over five to play before Washburn rallied. The Ichabods were able to get within five on two separate occasions, but could get no closer. The Mavericks made 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Washburn shot 40 percent, 25-of-62, from the floor, but just 39 percent in the second half. The Ichabods struggled from the foul line making 14-of-24 attempts for 58 percent.
De'Andre Washington led Washburn with 15 points, while
Dezahn Otis had 14 and
Bobby Chipman added a career-high 12 on four three-pointers.
Tyler Bullock led four Mavericks in double figures with 19 points. Andrew Bridger added 18 points and nine assists.
