Lady Blues netters reach MIAA Finals with 5-4 win over UNO

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues tennis team advanced to the MIAA Tennis Championship Tournament with a pair of wins including a 5-4 win over Nebraska-Omaha. Washburn will face Northwest Missouri in the finals at noon at Clayview Country Club.

Washburn's Alyssa Castillo wrapped up the match for the Lady Blues with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles over UNO's Heather Hottman capping a comeback for Washburn. The Lady Blues were down 2-1 after falling at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with the lone win coming in the top spot as Trang Le Nguyen and Abbey Sharpe topped Rachel Faulk and Traci Moklestad. Washburn then rallied in singles play to take the top four singles spots for the comeback win.

MIAA Championship Tournament -- First Round -- Box Score

The Lady Blues rolled to a 5-0 win over Missouri Southern in the first round of the MIAA Championship Tournament.
The Lady Blues picked up all three singles wins jumping out to the early lead. The No. 2 doubles team of Alyssa Castillo and Whitley Zitsch picked up an 8-0 sweep over Lauren Skimbo and Becca Sterling. In singles play, Annie Doole blanked Sterling 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Abbey Sharpe topped Skimbo 6-1, 6-0 locking up the 5-0 win. Washburn had won two of the first sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles as well.
