KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their third MIAA men's tennis championship in the last four years as they topped Southwest Baptist 5-4 at the Clayview Country Club on Sunday afternoon. Yann Kasay's win at No. 5 singles wrapped up the win for the Ichabods.

Kasay bounced back from a 7-2 loss in the first-set tiebreaker to defeat Jorge Palacios, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 singles to wrap up the win -- the first for the Ichabods under new head coach Dave Alden.

WU took a 2-1 lead in doubles -- losing at No. 1 while winning the other two flights, a 9-8 (8-6) win by Ryan Ward and Brad Johnston at No. 2 over Palacios and Jorge Margiotta to get the lead.

The lead grew to 4-1 after straight-set singles wins at No. 6 by Adam Rens and at No. 2 by Simon Blondin before the Bearcats rallied back to draw even. Margiotta won in two sets at No. 4 while  Marton Zsiga claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Brandon Joost at No. 1. Then  Agustin Mollar bounced back for a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 3 over junior Ryan Ward.

The Bearcats were denied what would have been their league-record 15th conference title.
