TOPEKA, Kan. -- The sixth-ranked Lady Blues rolled to a 3-0 sweep over Missouri Southern on Tuesday night at Lee Arena. Washburn won by set scores of 25-13, 25-21, 25-16. The Lady Blues are back in action this Friday at Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m.
Washburn (26-2, 14-2 MIAA) opened the game on a 10-2 run and never looked back. The first set lead grew to as many as 13 and WU finished out the opening set 25-13.
The second set was back-and-forth early on with seven ties and five lead changes. The Lions (15-12, 5-10 MIAA) grabbed the lead midway through the set and extended it to as many as four. An 8-2 run by the Lady Blues put them in front for good at 22-20. The Lady Blues scored three of the final four points for the 25-21 set two win.
Washburn raced out to another big lead in set three and pushed the lead to as many as 13. Missouri Southern got back to within eight, but the Lady Blues closed out the set 25-16 and the match three sets to none.
Molly Smith had a game-high 20 digs for Washburn moving her into ninth place on the MIAA career digs list with 1,938 digs. She also added five assists.
Hillary Hughes led the offensive attack with 12 kills to go along with nine digs.
Jessica Kopp had eight kills, while
Mollie Lacy and
Breanna Lewis added seven each.
Amanda Guess recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 20 assists and 12 digs.
Abby Wittman added 18 assists for Washburn.
Ashlee Russell led the Lions with a match-high 14 kills. Jenna Feldman had 13 digs for MSSU and Elin Skei dished out 17 assists.
