Washburn wraps up MIAA Crossover with extra inning loss to Hornets

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team wrapped up the MIAA April Crossover with a 3-2 overall record after falling 2-1 in eight innings to No. 4-ranked Emporia State. Washburn will be back in action at Southwest Baptist on April 23 in Boilvar, Mo., before facing Central Missouri the following day. Washburn has also announced May 2 as the make update of the second game of a doubleheader against UNO which was scrubbed because of wet fields. UNO topped the Lady Blues 4-0 on April 6 in the first game of the twinbill.

Against the Hornets, ESU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a home run by Linda Ketter. In the bottom of the fifth, Washburn tied the score on an RBI single by Lindsey Moore through the right side scoring Lauren Himpel who doubled in the inning down the left field line.

In the eighth inning using the international tie breaker, ESU's Angela Mahan hit a sac fly scoring Jenna Potter putting the Hornets up 2-1. In the Lady Blues half of the eighth inning, Lauren Himpel was placed on second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Zordel. Moore then popped out to second and Marissa Martin went down on strikes to end the game.

Kayla Long (10-11) took the loss allowing the one earned run in the third while scattering four hits. ESU's Jennifer Heerey improved to 17-1 on the season while allowing three Washburn hits.
