#3 Lady Blues suffer first loss of season

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The third-ranked Lady Blues suffered their first loss of the season, a 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 24-26, 17-25) setback, at the hands of No. 16-ranked Truman on Friday night at Pershing Arena. The loss drops Washburn to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Lady Blues will return to action on Saturday at Missouri Western at 12 p.m.

The Lady Blues jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in set one and never looked back as they cruised to the 25-18 win, but Truman would reel off three straight set wins to take the match.

The Bulldogs (8-2, 1-1 MIAA) responded, jumping out to a 7-2 lead early in set two. After Washburn tied the set at 8-8, TSU outscored the Blues 17-10 to tie the match at one set each.

Truman State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set three, but the Lady Blues rallied to tie the set and eventually take the lead at 13-12. Washburn extended the lead to as many as five and even led 23-21, but TSU rallied to tie the set and eventually take the upper hand in the match with the 26-24 win.

The fourth and deciding set for TSU saw the Lady Blues take an early lead and again extend that lead to as many as five at 12-7. The Bulldogs rallied to tie the set at 15-all and outscored WU 10-2 the rest of the way to hand Washburn its first loss of the season.

Sophomore Jessica Fey led the Lady Blues with nine kills, while junior Amanda Guess recorded her third double-double of the season with 26 assists and 14 digs. Senior Molly Smith had a team-high 17 digs.

Megan Sharpe led Truman with a match-high 14 kills, while Heather Hargadine added 11. Ashley Petak had 27 assists and 10 digs and Casey Bruno had a match-high 29 digs.
