Kopp has big night as Lady Blues win 19th straight, 3-0 at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. - Jessica Kopp had her second straight double-figure kill match as the Lady Blues opened November with a sweep at Missouri Southern, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22.

No. 3 Washburn won its 19th straight overall and extended its school-record MIAA winning streak to 22 straight matches. The Lady Blues (26-1, 13-0 MIAA) will return home to start a three-match home stand Friday at 7 p.m. against Southwest Baptist

Kopp had 11 kills, one more than the season-high of 10 she had Saturday at Missouri Western. She was the only Lady Blue to reach double-figure kills as Washburn hit .223 as a team.

Mollie Lacy had six kills with no errors for a .545 attack percentage. The school's career leader in attack percentage, Lacy has hit .486 in the last five matches with just three errors.

Lacy led Washburn with 11 blocks and Marissa Cox added four. Breanna Lewis had three solo blocks.

Hillary Hughes led the back row with 12 digs and she added eight kills. Abby Wittman had 20 assists and Amanda Guess had 13.

The Lady Blues hit just .086 in the first set and trailed numerous times. They gave up a 3-0 run to fall behind, 11-8 and then late in the set the Lions used another 3-0 run to take a 23-22 lead. Two straight MSSU errors and then a kill from Kopp gave Washburn the win.

Washburn controlled most of the second set and got to set point at 24-15. Missouri Southern went on a 4-0 run to get within five but Hughes got a kill for the win.

The Lions were looking to extend the match beyond three sets. They led, 20-16 in the final set before the Lady Blues spoiled their chances with a 7-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. A Lion error later clinched the match for Washburn.

Rachel Olinyk had 13 kills and Katie Politte had eight blocks to lead Missouri Southern (5-20, 3-10 MIAA).
