TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods picked up a Valentine's Day win over Truman topping the Bulldogs 72-61 in Lee Arena winning their sixth straight home game. Washburn (15-7, 12-6 MIAA) moved into a third-place tie with Nebraska-Omaha and will host conference-leading Missouri Southern on Thursday night.
Washburn led entering the halftime break 27-20 over Truman (6-16, 4-14 MIAA) behind
Logan Stutz's 15 first half points after going 6 of 9 from the field with five rebounds. Coming out of the break, Truman cut the lead to one three times with the last coming at 33-32 before the Ichabods pushed the lead back to seven at 39-32 with 14:24 to go in the game on a lay up by
Jadarren Mumpfield. After a bucket by Truman's Isaac Gardner,
Bobby Chipman pushed the lead back to seven before Gardner scored five straight points and Ethan Freeman put Truman up one at 42-41 with 9:43 to play in the game.
De'Andre Washington scored on a lay up returning the lead back to Washburn before Vesko Flichev put the Bulldogs back up one.
After a media timeout, Washington tied the score with a free throw and
Jeff Reid put Washburn up two with a layup of his own. A 3-pointer by Alex Henderson returned the lead to the visitors beofre the Ichabods'
Mitch Allen put Washburn up two with a 3-pointer, but the lead was short-lived as Tom Norton hit the Bulldogs back up one at 50-49 with 6:58 to go in the game. Washburn went up for good on its next possession on a 3-pointer by Mumpfield and streched the lead to as many as seven on a swipe and steal by
Nate Daniels with 2:44 to play. Truman would get no closer than five the rest of the way as the Ichabods went on for the 72-61 win.
Stutz finished with his seventh double double of his Washburn career and his fifth this season with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Mumpfield scored 12 with all dozen coming in the second half. Gardner and Freeman scored 15 each to pace Truman.
Washburn finished 44 percent from the field hitting 27 of 62 shots including 15 of 28 (54 percent) in the second half. Truman also shot 54 percent in the second half (14 fo 26) going 22 of 53 in the game (42 percent). Washburn finished 15 of 20 from the free throw line while Truman was 8 of 12.
The Ichabods held a 39 to 30 advantage on the glass turning 16 offensive rebounds into 22 second chance points while outscoring Truman in the paint 44 to 18.
