SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues kickoff off their spring season with a bang with a 6-3 win over No. 19 ranked Drury on the road in Springfield, Mo., at the Cooper Tennis Complex. Washburn (1-0) will be back in action on March 3 when they will play host to Nebraska-Kearney.
Washburn started out the match by sweeping doubles play as the No. 1 duo of
Alyssa Castillo and
Jamie Blackim took down Alana Bellinger and Palagie Gamo 8-6. The No. 2 team of
Morgan Rainey and
Whitley Zitsch knocked off Abbey Sharpe and Ivana Marevic 8-5 and the No. 3 team of
Elektra Hunter and
Annie Doole outlasted Ellen Bennett and Valentine Lambrechts 9-8.
In singles action, Rainey won a three-set match over Sharpe 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Castillo topped Lambrects 6-3, 6-0 and Kristen McKee won a three-setter of Bennett 6-3, 4-6 ,10-6.
