Ichabods set for weekend series with MWSU

Leading Off
Washburn (6-9, 6-6 MIAA) will host Missouri Western (7-10, 6-6 MIAA) in a four-game MIAA series starting on with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrapping up with another doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Series
Washburn and Missouri Western have met 98 times on the baseball diamond with the Ichabods holding a 55-43 advantage. Last season, the Ichabods swept the only two games in the series up in St. Joseph as the final doubleheader was rained out. Washburn is 47-37 against the Griffons under Steve Anson.

Washburn
The Ichabods were swept in a four-game series for the first time since dropping all four games to Fort Hays State during the 2008 season. Washburn hit just .171 as a team during the series and scored just 10 runs compared to 30 for the Mavericks.
WU is led offensively by Boone Plager with a .318 average. Andy Petz has a hit a team-high two home runs and also leads the team with 15 RBI.
Daren Parker is 2-1 in four appearances, three starts, and leads the team with a 0.90 ERA after having given up just two earned runs in 20 innings of work.
The Ichabods have yet to record a save out of the bullpen and the pitching staff boasts a 4.80 team ERA.

Missouri Western
The Griffons enter the contest at 7-10 overall and are tied with the Ichabods for fifth place in the MIAA with a 6-6 conference record. Missouri Western dropped three out of four games last weekend at home against Central Missouri.
Six players are hitting at least .300 led by Andrew Pieper's .341 average. Isaac Rome hits .309 and leads the team with three home runs and 15 RBI. Spencer Schockley also had 15 runs batted in and hits .298.
Mason Queen leads the pitching staff with a team-low 3.00 ERA in four relief appearances. Brandon Simmons leads the team with a pair of wins in five starts and has a 3.07 ERA. Tyler Riddle is 1-0 with a team-leading two saves in seven relief appearances.
The Griffon pitching staff has a 6.92 ERA and has given up 14 home runs.

Anson 10th on All-time wins list
Steve Anson has 787 career wins in his 33rd season as a head coach, including 761 wins in his 32nd season at Washburn. That victory total places him 10th on the all-time NCAA-II list. Anson has the most wins among active MIAA coaches.

Last Time out for Washburn
March 19, 2011 - OMAHA, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods were swept by Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday afternoon 6-1 and 14-4. The sweep drops Washburn to 6-9 overall and 6-6 in MIAA play. The Ichabods return home next weekend to host Missouri Western on Saturday and Sunday.
The Mavericks (11-4, 9-3 MIAA) took game one 6-1 plating three runs in the first and single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Washburn avoided the shutout with a single run in the top of the seventh on a David Wade RBI double.
Raul Guevara (1-2) gave up six runs on 12 hits in four innings and was tagged with the loss. Derek Landis (2-0) earned the win for UNO allowing just two hits in five innings.
The Mavericks completed the doubleheader and weekend sweep with a 14-4 win in the nightcap. Washburn jumped in front 3-0 in the second inning. Tyler Bean belted a two-run home run to left and Blake Hageman added an RBI single for Washburn.
UNO tallied one run in the third and took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth. WU pulled to within 6-4 on a Wade solo home run in the top of the sixth, but the Mavericks responded with four runs in the bottom half to go up 10-4. Nebraska-Omaha added one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to take the 10-run win.
Daren Parker (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up six runs, only one earned, on seven hits in five innings as the Ichabods committed five errors. Andrew Reck (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings to earn the win and Cory Buckley earned his second save of the season tossing three innings and giving up one run on two hits.
The four-game sweep was Washburn's first time being swept since 2008.

Last Time out for Missouri Western
MWSU Sports Info. - March 19, 2011 - St. Joseph, Mo. – Mother Nature played havoc on the Missouri Western baseball team's series finale with #3 Central Missouri. After a 40-minute lightning delay in the bottom of the seventh and another stoppage in the middle of the eighth, Western fell 9-3 to the Mules in a four hour and 26-minute game.
Western led 2-0 after two innings on an unearned run in the first and another in the second. Central got two in the third to knot it up at two apiece. The Mules added four in the fifth and two in the sixth. Andrew Pieper drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh before the first delay.
Nik Jurado (1-1) took the loss for the Griffons giving up five earned runs in four innings of work on six hits. Kyle Peterson finished 2-3 at the plate for Western. Pieper was 1-4 with a run scored and the lone RBI. Jake Graham was 2-4 with a run scored. Isaac Rome was shutout at the plate, but went 7-14 in the series with six RBI.
Western fell to 7-10 overall and 6-6 in conference play. The Griffons head to Topeka for a series with Washburn March, 26 and 27. Western will return to the Spring Sports Complex for a three day series with Northwest Missouri State, April 1, 2 and 3.

Up Next
Washburn hits the road for 11 straight games beginning with a doubleheader at Fort Hays State on Tuesday, March 29 at 2 p.m. The Ichabods will then travel to Missouri Southern (April 2-3), Newman (April 5) and Lincoln (April 8-10) before returning home on April 12 to host Fort Hays State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
