TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods had their losing streak extended to six by virtue of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Missouri Western Griffons on Friday afternoon at Falley Field. MWSU took game one 14-3 before completing the sweep with a 5-1 win in the nightcap. The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
Missouri Western (9-10, 8-6 MIAA) grabbed a 4-0 lead right out of the gates thanks in part to two Washburn errors. The Griffons added two more runs in the top of the second and led 6-0. The Ichabods (6-11, 6-8 MIAA) got one run back in the bottom of the second on a Boone Plager RBI single, but MWSU got that run right back in the top of the third on an Ian Atkinson RBI single. Andy Petz tripled home Travis Cruz in the bottom of the third to pull the 'Bods to within 7-2.
Another RBI single from Atkinson extended the Griffons' lead to 8-2 in the fifth. Plager scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-3, but Missouri Western plated six runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh for the 14-3 win.
Brett Ash (1-4) was roughed up in the loss giving up seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work. Alex Coons allowed one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of relief and Drew Mikkelson gave up six runs on eight hits in two innings of work.
Brandon Simmons (3-3) earned the win for Missouri Western giving up three runs, two earned on nine hits in six innings. Mason Queen pitched a perfect seventh in relief for the Griffons.
Game two was a pitcher's duel in the early going before Washburn broke through with a single run in the sixth to grab the lead. Petz had an RBI double scoring Travis Cruz to give WU the 1-0 advantage.
Ichabod starter Derek Fogel (0-3) took a no-hit bid into the seventh before losing the no-hitter, shutout and eventually the game. He allowed back-to-back hits to open the frame and eventually gave up three runs, all in the seventh, on three hits while striking out a career-high nine in seven innings.
The Griffons tacked on two more insurance runs in the the top of the ninth off of reliever Kerry Schachenmeyer for the 5-1 win.
Washburn left 10 runners on base in the game, including seven in scoring position and the 'Bods were 1-for-11 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
MWSU starter Oliver Kadey allowed one run on four hits in 5.1 innings. He walked four and struck out six. Ryan Carbah (1-2) got the win in relief tossing 3.2 innings of two-hit ball. He walked two batters and struck out eight on the way to his first win of the season.
