TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues captured the outright MIAA championship and fifth MIAA trophy overall with a 9-0 beatdown on Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon at the Washburn Tennis Complex. With the win the Lady Blues will be the No. 1 seed at the MIAA Tournament next weekend in Kansas City.
Washburn opened the match dropping only three games in doubles play nicluding a 8-0 blanking at No. 1 doubles by
Jamie Blackim and
Alyssa Castillo over Melissa Skovira and Brianna Watkins.
Morgan Rainey and
Whitley Zitsch topped Brittney Shea and Laura Johnson 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while
Annie Doole and
Elektra Hunter topped Zoie Young and Megan Quinley 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Washburn continued to roll during singles play with Rainey picking up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Skovira while Zitch won her No. 2 singles match over Johnson 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 singles Hunter topped Young 6-2, 6-1 and Blackim topped Shea 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Castillo topped Watkins 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles while
Kristin McKee topped Amy Guilliams 6-2, 6-1.
The regular season championship was the first for the Lady Blues as the MIAA added the regular season championship beginning last year. Washburn won the MIAA Tournament championship last year in Kansas City. Washburn also won the MIAA tourney title following the 1991, 2000 and 2004 seasons.
