TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were swept in a pair of non-conference games by Baker dropping both games 3-0 on Wednesday at the Washburn Softball Complex. Washburn (12-24) will return to MIAA play this weekend with twinbills scheduled at Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri on Friday and Saturday.
In the opener, Baker scored all three of their runs in the third inning as the Wildcats used a solo home run by Brooke Allen and a two-run shot by Erin Greenwood pushing themselves to a 3-0 lead. Greenwood (8-9) picked up the win for the Wildcats striking out six.
Danielle Fox (5-12) took the loss for the Lady Blues who gave away to
Kelsie Novotny to start the fourth inning. Novotny held the Wildcats without a hit striking out six in relief. Washburn outhit the Wildcats 6-4 with
Alex Zordel collecting two hits. Washburn stranded seven on base in the game.
In the nightcap, Maggie Holmberg improved to 12-4 while tossing a one-hit shutout over the Lady Blues. Washburn's lone hit came in the fourth inning on a single to right by Zordel. The Wildcats broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in the sixth inning taking advantage of a Washburn error. Greenwood singled to center driving in two runs and Heather Gruber singled to left picking up an RBI. Novotny (7-11) took the loss striking out three.
