Lady Blues roll over Griffons to open MIAA Tennis Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The top-seeded Washburn Lady Blues tennis team tossed a shutout in their opening match of the MIAA Championship Tennis Tournament with a 5-0 win over Missouri Western improving to 12-4 on the season. Washburn will take on the winner of Nebraska-Omaha/Northwest Missouri match tomorrow.

The Lady Blues dropped only two games in doubles play while the Jamie Blackim and Alyssa Castillo topped Mindy Buschbom and Sophia Robertson at No. 1 doubles 8-1. Morgan Rainey and Whitley Zitsch blanked Erin Ward and Nicole Kerr 8-0 at No. 2 doubles while Annie Doole and Elektra Hunter and Annie Doole defeated Sarah Hatten and Katie Field 8-1.

Blackim topped Field at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1 while Castillo shutout Hatten at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 in a match which was finished at Hilltop Tennis Center as rain forced play indoors.
