TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues picked up their first win of the season opening MIAA play with a 1-0 win over Emporia State in Yager Stadium.
The win snapped a 16-match winless streak for the Lady Blues (1-4-0, 1-0-0 MIAA) and a seven-match losing streak dating back to Sept. 17, 2011 in a 2-0 win over Fort Hays State.
Washburn scored the only goal of the match when
Tia Stovall scored her first goal of the season on an assist from 8-yards out at the 6:36 mark of the first half on an assist from
Lindsey Lambert, her first of the season.
Washburn kept the pressure on the Hornets (2-3-0, 0-1-0 MIAA) the remainder of the half outshooting ESU 5 to 2 in the first half.
In the second half, Washburn outshot the Hornets 4 to 2 while taking four corner kicks compared to none for the Hornets.
Tori Fuglister picked up the shutout win in net for Washburn as she faced four shots recording two saves - one in each half.
Caysie Beetley led the team with four shots including two on goal while Stovall finished with three shots and two on goal.
Leah Talley and
Kelsey Ewert each had one shot attempt.
ESU had four players with a single shot with Mindi Lozenski and Elizabeth High each recording a shot on goal

Last Meeting with the Jennies (Oct. 6, 2011)
WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were outshot 27 to 1 in a 5-0 loss at No. 12 Central Missouri Thursday night on the Jennies Soccer Field.
The Lady Blues (1-8-2, 1-1-1 MIAA) were outshot 13 to 0 in the first half while the Jennies (10-1-0, 3-0-0 MIAA) also attempted six corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. Washburn did not attempt its first shot of the match until
Devon Tarantino's shot at the 84:53 mark of the match was stopped short of the goal by the Jennies' Linnsie McMahan.
Washburn trailed 4-0 at the end of the first half after Becky Lackey started the scoring in the 26th minute on an assist from Alyssa Rhodes. Rhodes would go on and add two goals on the night - the first in the 31st minute and the second almost seven minutes later. Aaryn Burke scored just before the half to send the Jennies to the locker room with the 4-0 lead.
Sarah Hotop pushed the UCM lead to 5-0 with an unnassisted goal in the 72nd minute.
The Jennies would go on to outshoot the Lady Blues 27 to 1 in the match.
Tori Fuglister recorded eight saves in net for Washburn while facing 27 shots in 90 minutes of play. Tarantino's shot was the only shot on goal for the Lady Blues.

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team attempted a season-high 28 shots in a 1-1 double overtime tie with Southwest Baptist.
The Lady Blues fell behind early when SBU was awarded a penalty kick and Kelly Isaac scored in the 12th minute staking the Bearcats to the early lead.
Washburn knotted the score in the 24th minute when
Leah Talley scored a goal in her second straight match after recording one with the Griffons. Talley scored on an assist from
Megan Buckley.
Washburn's
Mallorie Monhollon recorded 10 saves in net for the Lady Blues while facing 28 shots from the Bearcats.
Caysie Beetley recorded eight shots for Washburn with three on goal while Talley added five shots and
Lauren Henry added four.
