TOPEKA, Kan. -- A 24-3 run over a nine minute stretch of the second half turned a three-point deficit into a 16-point lead as the Ichabods improved to 5-0 witha 79-70 win over Rockhurst on Thursday night on Schendel Court at Lee Arena. Washburn will return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they will host Newman.
The Ichabods trailed by as many as six in the first half as the Hawks (2-2) took a 40-36 lead into the halftime break behind 56 percent shooting while forcing the Ichabods into seven turnovers while they held a 10-2 advantage in fastbreak points.
Washburn chipped away at the Hawks' lead and would overcome the margin when
Jeff Reid's tip in pulled Washburn within three at 50-47 kickstarting the 24-3 swing.
Kyle Wiggins scored seven in the run while
Leon Flowers,
Alex North and
Andy Wilson all hit 3-pointers while Wiggins added two of his own during the Washburn stretch with Washburn going up 69-53 with 5:56 to play which was its largest lead of the night.
The Hawks hit two 3-pointers in the final 56 seconds to trim the margin back to single digits as the ichabods took the 79-70 win taking their 26th-straight regular season non-conference victory.
Stephon Drane led the Ichabods with a season-high 18 points off 6 of 9 shooting from the field pacing four total Ichabods in double figures. Wiggins had 16 points and a career-high seven rebounds while North recorded his fifth double double of his career and the third in five games this season with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, which also tied a career high. Reid finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds recording his first double double at Washburn with a career-best on the boards against Rockhurst.
Brandon McCann had 19 to lead the Hawks and James Robinson had 13 points hitting double figures.
Washburn held a 41-28 advantage on the glass and outscored the Hawks 38 to 16 in the paint.
